A diving course in Singapore costs $838 at our PADI dive centre and takes three to four days: theory done online at home, a confined water session, then open water training dives at Pulau Hantu or Lazarus Island. We run the full recreational path from our shop at 178 Paya Lebar Road, Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver, every course at the same flat $838 with only 4 to 5 students per class.

This page is the map for all of it: what each PADI course in Singapore certifies you to do, what the price actually includes, how the “diving license” question really works, and which course to book depending on where you are starting from.

The PADI course chart: Open Water to Rescue and beyond

PADI names trip people up because “Open Water” appears twice. The order is simpler than it looks:

    1. Open Water Diver: the entry-level certification. You learn the theory, master the skills in confined water, then complete four open water training dives. The card qualifies you to dive to 18 metres with a buddy and is the proof dive centres and resorts ask for worldwide.
    2. Advanced Open Water: five Adventure Dives, two of them fixed (a deep dive below the 18-metre Open Water limit and an underwater navigation dive) plus three of your choice. It extends your depth rating to 30 metres, which is what many deeper reef, wall and wreck sites require.
    3. Rescue Diver: the course that turns your attention from yourself to other divers. A self-rescue review, ten rescue exercises covering everything from a panicked diver at the surface to surfacing an unresponsive diver, then two open water scenarios as the in-water final exam. PADI notes that countless divers name it their favourite course.

Beyond Rescue the path branches into specialties: each Adventure Dive you complete during the Advanced course can count as the first dive of the matching PADI Specialty certification, with electives including Wreck, Night, Enriched Air Nitrox, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Search and Recovery, and Digital Underwater Photography.

How much does a diving course cost in Singapore?

Every PADI course we run is $838. Not a from-price and not a promotion: the same flat number across all three levels, so the decision is about your training, never a price gap.

    Course Price Prerequisites Schedule
PADI Open Water Diver $838 None. Minimum age 10, good health, able to swim 200 metres and float for 10 minutes without aids Day 1 online eLearning; Day 2 confined pool session; Days 3 and 4 open water dives at Hantu or Lazarus
PADI Advanced Open Water $838 Open Water Diver certification, or an equivalent-level certification from another agency Day 1 online eLearning; Days 2 and 3 open water dives at Hantu or Lazarus
PADI Rescue Diver $838 Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) plus first aid and CPR training within the previous two years Day 1 online eLearning; Days 2 and 3 in-water rescue training at Hantu or Lazarus

All three prices include the PADI certification itself, the PADI online materials, use of all scuba equipment, the training dives and confined sessions, and the instructor fee. Meals, drinks and insurance are the only exclusions. Classes run at 4 to 5 students, dates are flexible, and Open Water and Advanced have no minimum sign-up numbers; Rescue needs a minimum of 2 divers for weekday runs.

If you are hunting for a cheap diving course in Singapore, compare line items rather than headline numbers. A quote only becomes comparable once it covers the certification fee, the online materials, full equipment use and the instructor fee; ask whether each of those is inside the number you have been given.

Is there a diving license in Singapore?

No. There is no government-issued diving license in Singapore or anywhere else in recreational diving. What a course earns you is a certification card, the C-card, issued by a training agency as proof of completed training; operators ask to see it before they take you diving, but it is a credential, not a permit.

The agencies behind those cards (PADI, SSI, NAUI and others) mutually recognise each other’s entry-level certifications, so an SSI diver is welcome at PADI operations and the reverse. A PADI diving certification earned in Singapore is recognised internationally and is valid for life: no renewal and no expiry date.

One soft rule worth knowing: if you have not dived in 6 to 12 months, dive shops will generally recommend a refresher before your next trip. That is a safety practice, not a legal requirement. PADI’s version is called ReActivate, and completing it earns a replacement card with a “ReActivated thru” date that operators like to see.

Which diving course should I start with?

Never dived before? Open Water Diver, no exceptions; it is the entry point to everything above it. The bar is lower than most people expect: minimum age 10, reasonable health and fitness, comfort in the water, and the ability to swim 200 metres and float for 10 minutes without aids.

Not sure diving is for you yet? PADI’s Discover Scuba Diving experience exists for exactly this: no certification needed, a shallow supervised session and an optional open water dive to a maximum of 12 metres, always under the direct supervision of a PADI Professional. It is a taster, not a certification; the Open Water course is what puts a card in your hand.

Already certified with another agency? Cross straight over. An entry-level SSI or NAUI certification qualifies you for the PADI Advanced Open Water course without redoing the basics.

Certified years ago and rusty? Do a refresher first, then continue to Advanced or Rescue. Message us on WhatsApp with your certification history and we will tell you which course actually fits.

How long does each diving course take?

Open Water: with the eLearning done at home in advance, the in-water portion fits into three to four days in total, which is exactly how our schedule runs: one pool day plus two open water days. New divers typically complete everything within 3 to 5 days end to end.

Advanced Open Water: the eLearning takes roughly 6 to 8 hours at your own pace, and the five Adventure Dives are commonly wrapped up over a single weekend. Our itinerary is exactly that: one eLearning day, then two dive days.

Rescue Diver: self-paced eLearning plus about two days of in-water training and scenarios. Add roughly one more day if you still need the first aid and CPR qualification, which must have been completed within the previous two years.

Because the training dives run at Hantu and Lazarus, the open water days are local: no flights, no resort bookings, no leave application beyond the weekend.

Why certify with a dive shop rather than on a trip?

The card is identical wherever you earn it: a PADI Open Water certification issued after a course in Singapore is the same certification issued anywhere in the world. The differences are practical.

And to be precise about try dives: a supervised experience in a pool or at a resort is an experience, not a certification course. If the goal is a card recognised worldwide, only the full course delivers it.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need a diving license to dive in Singapore?

No. No diving license exists; recreational diving runs on certification cards issued by training agencies such as PADI, SSI and NAUI. Operators will ask to see your C-card before taking you out, so certification is effectively required, but it is a training credential, not a government permit.

    Does a PADI certification expire?

No. Entry-level recreational certifications from the major agencies are valid for life. If you have been out of the water for 6 to 12 months, a refresher such as PADI ReActivate is recommended before your next dives, but that is safety practice, not an expiry rule.

How much is a diving course in Singapore?

At our centre, a flat $838 for each of the three PADI levels: Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver. The price includes the certification, PADI online materials, all equipment, the training dives with confined sessions, and the instructor fee; only meals, drinks and insurance sit outside it.

Can I try diving without any certification?

Yes, through supervised experiences. PADI’s Discover Scuba Diving programme takes complete beginners from age 10 on a shallow, directly supervised session, with an optional open water dive to a maximum of 12 metres. It does not certify you; the Open Water course does.

How old do you have to be to take a diving course?

Ten, for the PADI Open Water course. Divers aged 10 to 14 earn the Junior Open Water certification, with depth capped at 12 metres for ages 10 to 11 and 18 metres for ages 12 to 14; the card upgrades to the full certification at 15. Children under 13 need parent or guardian consent for PADI eLearning.

I certified with SSI. Can I join the PADI Advanced course?

Yes. The major agencies recognise each other’s entry-level certifications, so an SSI or NAUI Open Water diver can enrol directly in the PADI Advanced Open Water course.

Which PADI course is the best one to take?

The one your current level unlocks next. New divers get the most from Open Water by definition; if deeper sites keep appearing on your wish list, Advanced Open Water and its 30-metre rating is the answer; and PADI itself notes that countless divers name Rescue Diver their favourite course of all. All three are $838 with us.

Pick your level and book: the PADI Open Water course for first-timers, Advanced Open Water to go deeper, or Rescue Diver to become the diver everyone wants on the boat. Every course is $838 with 4 to 5 students per class, and dates flex around your schedule.
